The McMinnville School District (MSD) is piloting a fifth grade band program, which kicks off the week of September 26. An after-school program, participating students from all elementary schools will work with Dave Barton and Marc Dana, band directors from the high school and middle schools.

The program will run two days a week from 2:30 – 3:45 p.m. and take place at Patton Middle School.  Students will be bussed to Patton and KOB students will be bussed back to their elementary schools.  Other students may walk home, be picked up by parents at Patton, or ride a bus home from Patton.

Columbus, Memorial and Wascher students have band on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Buel, Grandhaven and Newby students have band on Mondays and Wednesdays).

“We’re very excited to pilot this new music opportunity,” said Stephanie Legard, MSD’s director of STEAM.  “Music is a great way for students to use their brains differently and to learn in new ways.”

Students were invited to sign up last spring and have the option to choose flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone or percussion. Students must own or rent an instrument, but directors will work with students to ensure anyone who wants to participate can access an instrument.  Click here for more information on instrument rental.
