Columbus serves 510 students in kindergarten
through fifth grade (including students in the Structured Learning
Program).Twenty-two percent (or 112) of our students are English
Language Learners, and 67% qualify under the Federal Free and Reduced
Lunch Program. We have an average class size of 23 students in grades
one through five, and the class size average for kindergarten is 19.
At Columbus we offer a dual language
(Spanish/English) program at all grade levels. We are in our eleventh
year of its implementation and very proud of the success of the
program. Columbus also offers an after school academic support program
called Success Now and partners with McMinnville Parks and Recreation
to offer the Kids on the Block program. We partner with Linfield College
in the America Reads program, which brings student volunteers into the
school to read with students. We also have volunteers reading with
students through the SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program.
The Columbus School mission statement is, “We are empowering our children to be responsible, respectful, life-long learners.” We
are dedicated to providing all students with the educational foundation
necessary to succeed in school and in life. We make it a practice to
focus on the individual learner and to maintain an atmosphere that meets
the needs of all students, promotes success for all and fosters
openness for change. Our teachers, specialists and educational
assistants take this mission seriously and work together toward meeting
student needs.
